Maladies

These are ailments that you want to avoid. This is easy in most cases if you are take the necessary precautions and have the facts. One of the number one spoilers is SUNBURN. Have an SPF of at least 15 and use it year round. Wear protective clothing.  Many clothes now have UV protection in the material.  Long sleeve shirts and long pants in light colors are always a good idea as is a hat with a brim. DEHYDRATION can cause confusion and actually send you into shock.  The main thing to remember here is drink before you become thirsty.  Drink at least an 8 ounce glass of water every hour to stay hydrated.   Avoid diuretics such as caffeine and alcohol.  In the summer active persons should aim for a gallon of water each 24 hours. HEAT EXHAUSTION can come upon you suddenly and not only when it is sunny.  Hot and humid conditions with or without sun can drain your energy quickly.  When outdoors slow down and take frequent rest breaks. Carry your own shade in the form of a UV protective umbrella or perhaps a beach pop up sun shelter.  Wear light weight light colored clothing and your hat.  BUGS are attracted to bright colors.  Wear your light colored clothing to lessen the possibility of insect bites and stings.  Avoid scented lotions and use an insect repellant lotion or spray.  DIARRHEA can strike if you indulge in rich foods and too many adult beverages. Thoroughly cook your food and stick with the basics of a simple healthy diet.
