Review September 2006
Rancho Ruidoso Condominiums
Little Creek Road
Alto, NM 88312
505-336-8103
The 21 units at this resort are 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms condominiums housed in 4 separate buildings. Each features a fireplace and southwestern décor.
The complex is older and does show some wear, however both times we stayed here we found our unit clean and comfortable. The appliances in the full kitchen are older however did work. Kitchen equipment is hit or miss, however when I requested additional items they were promptly supplied with a smile. The silverware was badly in need of replacement and there were no useable sharp knives. The dining area seats up to six and the living room has a TV, DVD player, a double sleep sofa, and two easy chairs. The sofa and chairs are well worn. All of the floors are terra cotta tile making an easy clean up with a mop or broom if you track in mud from that hike in the forest or snow from that downhill run. There are no TV's in the bedrooms, and the mattresses on the beds are only passably comfortable. The linens, both sheets and towels are worn but clean and well supplied. The units are not air conditioned however you won't miss it since you are at 7,200 ft here. There is electric baseboard heating for those cooler nights.
There is a swimming pool open seasonally; tennis courts and children's play area. There is a laundry room available to guests at no charge. There are no organized activities. A car is necessary to enjoy the area. Parking is a few steps from your unit and there is ample room if you bring your boat trailer or arrive in an RV.
The managers are very friendly and will make recommendations for restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing. This resort is pet friendly and your dog (or cat) will be truly welcomed.
Ranches and country roads surround this resort, which is set in a valley, at the edge of the Lincoln National Forest. Mountain views can be enjoyed in all directions. This is a quiet and remote location, which requires a drive of approximately 7 miles to the nearest grocery store and 15 miles to town for more shopping.
Activities in the area include year round hiking, mountain biking, as well as excellent skiing in the winter. Sightseeing opportunities nearby include White Sands National Monument, the town of Lincoln with it's Billy the Kid history, the town of Roswell allegedly the site of the 1947 UFO crash and the Three Rivers Petroglyphs Site with it's thousands of ancient images carved into the rock. There is also live horse racing in the summer at Ruidoso Downs and gambling at the nearby Mescalero Apache Reservation.
