It is your responsibility to thoroughly research the park and surrounding area. A helpful website is the ‘Public Use Statistics Office’ website. Here you will find information on the visitation of every National Park by year. You will also find a complete listing of the acreage of each park. (more…)

Questions you should ask your volunteer recruiter

Will I receive housing in exchange for my volunteer hours in the form of an RV pad or dormitory. Does the RV pad have full hook ups. Where is the closest place to buy propane. If dormitory style housing is the bedroom and bath private for the couple or is it a shared bath. Are the common areas fully equipped (as in kitchen for cooking) and shared amongst how many people.Is the housing within walking distance of the place of work. (more…)

Notice the start date and end date for the job. Often the dates can be flexible if you ask. Notice the time commitment required. Most jobs require a 2 or 3 month commitment and this is usually not negotiable. Notice amount of hours per week required. 32 hours split between the couple is common or 16-24 hours for a single. This is not normally negotiable either. Study closely the sections on suitability and difficulty. Know your personal limitations. (more…)

With 391 National Park Service Areas your choices are many. Some are the big parks people normally think of such as Yellowstone, the very first park established by law anywhere in the world in 1872. Others are smaller areas set aside to protect our history. The Antiquites Act of 1906 allowed the President to set aside government lands as National Monuments. Many of these National Monuments eventually become National Parks. (more…)
