Let me start by saying that we have not stayed at this RV Park. I am writing about it because they have a different, unique concept for RV’ers looking for a longer stay and I thought this might be of interest to some of you. First, the basics. The Camel Stop RV Park offers 40 large, wide pull-thrus with free wi-fi but no cable TV. The rate is $20 or $22 per night, varying for 30 or 50 amp service. The weekly rate is $100-$110 and the monthly rate $325-$350 including all utilities. Now for the unique. You may lease one of 3 RV Ports or one of 8 RV Villas by the month. The RV Ports consist of a covered garage area for your RV, a covered area for your tow vehicle, a 12X20 ft storage room and a 12X12 covered patio. The monthly rate is $500 with all bills paid. The villas consist of an RV Port, a garage, a storage room and a 900 square foot apartment which includes appliances. The monthly rate for the villa is $800. We drove by this park in November of 2009 on our way home to the Dallas/Fort Worth area from a stay in Junction The park looks clean, lots of grassy areas and trees that will eventually provide needed shade in the hot Texas summers. The Camel Stop RV Park is located on 20 acres just off US 377 between Stephenville and Dublin, Texas. (Dublin is home to the original Dr. Pepper) It is approximately 75 miles from Fort Worth, Texas and 100 miles from Dallas, Texas. If you are looking for an overnight RV campground between Amarillo and Abilene Texas, and you are thinking maybe you want to stop overnight before you get to Abilene, Sweetwater would be the place. Here are two possibilities we spotted from the highway. We have not stayed at either park but intend to try out one or both on future trips. At milemarker #250 on the eastbound side of I-20 is a park called Rolling Plains RV Park. They are at 9909 Interstate 20, Frontage Rd. Sweetwater, Texas. 325-235-8114 At the approximate same location but on the westbound side of I-20 is a park called Lone Star RV Park. 5730 N. Interstate 20, Sweetwater Texas 79556 Exit 249 325-235-1553 Both of these campgrounds are easily visible from I-20 and look like easy on and off I-20 for an overnight stay.
Cedar Rail Campground & RV Park, Raton New Mexico
Sunday, October 25th, 2009Cedar Rail Campground & RV Park is situated at the very top of Raton Pass in New Mexico. This is a great overnight stop with incredible views as a bonus when you are traveling to or from Colorado. About half of the sites have 50 amp service, three of them situated in the center of the campground are ample size fairly level pull-thrus. The others are back-ins and some are smaller than others so be sure to mention the size of your rig when you call for reservations, which is recommended. We paid $29 for the pull-thru site for the night, however back-in sites may be less expensive. There is free wi-fi but no cable TV. Tent campers are welcomed. Tye RV Park, Tye Texas

We ended up camping here accidently in March 2009. Heading westbound on I-20 we spotted the ‘camping next exit’ sign and exited at business Tye MM 281. We didn’t realize we had mistakenly driven by the KOA. Not wanting to turn around we decided to give the Tye RV Park a try for the night. The check in folks were very friendly. Camping was $25 per night. Payment is check or cash only. There is no wi-fi here and basic cable only. The camp sites are not very level, the restroom has a curtain instead of a door and the resident campers have a fair amount of litter and junk around their sites. The area is noisy with jet planes flying low overhead from the nearby AFB. We would not stay here again. Buck Creek RV Park, Abilene Texas

We decided to give the Buck Creek RV Park a try for an overnight in September, 2009 instead of our usual overnight stop at the KOA.
The pull-thrus were very long and fairly level. We camped here in a 5th wheel and the hook-ups, although there were two sets at each site were not conveniently located if you wanted to stay hooked up to your tow vehicle. Perhaps this type of set up worked better for the large motor homes, of which there were a few spending the night. The park is located off of I-20 on the westbound side at exit 294. Once you exit, the 1/4 mile road to the park is a narrow dirt road. Luckily no traffic was coming out of the park since there is really only room for one vehicle at a time on this road. The fellow checking us in was friendly and did give us a 10% TSD Texas Saver Discount (a membership card obtained for free in various Texas and New Mexico RV guides) discount upon presentation of the membership card. The regular camping charge here for the pull-thru with 50amp service is $30. Wi-fi worked fine but there was no cable TV. We used our antenna and received local channels. The restrooms are located in a metal shed building. Although clean, the trash cans were overflowing as well as overflowing dumpsters on the premises. A stray dog ran through the campground during our stay. He was friendly but wouldn’t leave us and our own dog alone. Resident campers told us this dog was a stray and they were trying to shoo him away. All things considered we would not stay at the Buck Creek RV Park again. The KOA is a few dollars more expensive but worth the difference for a better run park. 325-691-0398 buckcreekrvpark.com
